Gill

Gill Barnsley, co-organiser of the Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium, died peacefully at Lorn and Islands hospital, Oban on 5th May 2017. She will be sorely missed by Colin, friends, family and colleagues.

A gathering to celebrate Gill’s life will be held on Thursday 25 May at 1pm in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls, Oban. All are welcome; Colin hopes that as many of Gill’s friends, colleagues, neighbours and fellow paddlers as possible will come to the gathering.

Colin requests that bright, casual/outdoor clothing be worn. Family flowers only. A retiral collection/donations will be taken for the Macmillan Suite at Lorn & Islands Hospital, Oban.

Next Symposium

The Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium is taking a wee break in 2017 - giving everyone a chance to practise their ceilidh dancing before the next Symposium! We hope to see you back at the Symposium in 2018.

In the meantime, happy paddling and we look forward to seeing you at Kari-Tek to help you find your perfect kayaking gear.

A Symposium with a difference.

The Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium will take place in the beautiful village of Tayvallich in North Knapdale, Argyll. Our aim is for you to thoroughly enjoy the weekend and to come away with a new or much improved set of kayaking skills. With one coach to every six participants and a maximum of 60 participants, you'll have a much more personal experience than at other symposiums.

Tayvallich

The village is around 12 miles from Lochgilphead, and has an inn, cafe, shop and campsite, and offers direct access to the stunning, sheltered waters of Loch Sween: see village website www.tayvallich.com. The village is also great for access to the more exposed Sound of Jura, with the beautiful bay at Carsaig under a mile away, offering far reaching views to Jura and Islay in the south and to Scarba and beyond in the north.

Symposium Hub

We'll be using the Tayvallich village hall as the Symposium Hub. Registration will be at the Hub, and courses will start from here. And perhaps most importantly, the Hub will be where the Saturday evening ceilidh with live band will take place.

Accommodation

Please arrange your own accommodation for the weekend. There are several options - plenty of camping pitches at the campsite in Tayvallich plus limited B&B or hotel accommodation.

Camping: Leachive Campsite is in Tayvallich itself - right beside the loch.

Bed and Breakfast/hotels -There are a limited number of B&Bs in and around Tayvallich which tend to book up really quickly ie. by Nov/Dec. There are also B&Bs/hotels in nearby Crinan, Cairnbaan, Kilmartin or Lochgilphead.

Food and Drink

Tayvallich has a very good Cafe overlooking the loch which is open during the day. (9-5pm on Fri/Sat and 10-5pm on Sunday). The shop and cafe are a couple of minutes walk from the Symposium hub in Tayvallich village hall.

The Tayvallich Inn is a popular spot for food and drink: see website www.tayvallichinn.co.uk

There's also a village shop to pick up any food supplies you need.

Evening Entertainment

There will be a ceilidh dance with live band on Saturday night at the Symposium Hub in Tayvallich village hall (included in the Symposium fee). Please bring your own refreshments.
