Midwest Symposium to return in Spring 2022?

Plans are afoot for a possible Spring 2022 return of the popular Midwest Sea Kayak Symposium from Argyll Kayaks, last held in 2019. Check back here or the Argyll Kayaks website for more news...

Symposium Programme

Whether you're fairly new to kayaking or novice/improving paddler looking to hone your existing skills, the Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium is perfect for you! After a couple of days with our experienced coaches, you'll really feel the difference in your skill level and on-the-water confidence.

When you book your place, participants can select your preferred courses in advance of the Symposium and we'll do our utmost to meet your wishes. If you are a near-beginner, just let us know when you book and we'll choose the courses which are best for you. Our provisional programme is outlined below:

  • Forward PaddlingHalf day. Begins on dry land, moves quickly to the on-water environment.
  • Edging and TurningHalf day. Improve your turning skills and tune your edging to help you not only to hold a straight line but also paddle in the wind.
  • Moving SidewaysHalf day. Why do we need to move sideways in the first place? Stationary and on the move techniques.
  • Close Quarter Manoeuvring - Half day. A mix of techniques, a look at timing and how to use the wind to your best advantage if it’s blowing.
  • Towing - Half day. A look at different towing techniques. How & when to use them & the pitfalls involved of playing with string.
  • Recovery & Rescues - Half day. Bread & butter Recovery and Rescue skill sets.
  • RollingHalf day. Get cold, get wet, get ready to hold your breath.
  • Coastal Navigation IntroductionHalf day. Land based intro into what goes into planning a sea kayak journey.
  • Sea Kayak CampingHalf day. Slurp coffee while looking and talking through kit, boats, food, tents, radios, flares, leave-no-trace, loo roll and setting islands alight through the misuse thereof.
  • Packing Your Sea Kayak for Best TrimHalf day / full day. The ideas behind packing your sea kayak for an extended journey. Tips & hints to make your life easier. How and where the stuff you put into your boat affects its handling. Half day - land based theory. Full day – land based theory and on-the-water experimentation for correct trim.
  • Sea Kayak JourneyHalf day. The sun will shine. What little wind there is will turn with you to ease your way forward as otters and dolphins play enthusiastically between the boats. Your only concern will be how high a factor sun screen you will need to use. Coach led.
  • Sea Kayak Journey - Full day. West Coast of Scotland – honestly the best way to see it. Coach led.

The 2019 Symposium registration fee (including Saturday night ceilidh) is £150 per person.
