Gill Barnsley, co-organiser of the Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium, died peacefully at Lorn and Islands hospital, Oban on 5th May 2017. She will be sorely missed by Colin, friends, family and colleagues.

A gathering to celebrate Gill’s life will be held on Thursday 25 May at 1pm in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls, Oban. All are welcome; Colin hopes that as many of Gill’s friends, colleagues, neighbours and fellow paddlers as possible will come to the gathering.

Colin requests that bright, casual/outdoor clothing be worn. Family flowers only. A retiral collection/donations will be taken for the Macmillan Suite at Lorn & Islands Hospital, Oban.

Next Symposium

The Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium is taking a wee break in 2017 - giving everyone a chance to practise their ceilidh dancing before the next Symposium! We hope to see you back at the Symposium in 2018.

In the meantime, happy paddling and we look forward to seeing you at Kari-Tek to help you find your perfect kayaking gear.

Mid West Sea Kayak Symposium

With clear skies, sunshine and light winds Tayvallich in Argyll was picture perfect for the 3 day holiday weekend. Over 55 paddlers from all over the UK joined our great coaching team for a symposium aimed at helping novice and improver sea paddlers increase their core kayaking skills.

The symposium coaching programme was put together by Colin McWilliams of Oban Sea Kayak Guides and a superb 11-strong coaching team, who delivered sessions including forward paddling, edging and turning, towing and rolling. Off the water highlights included a superb Saturday night ceilidh with locals joining in the fun. Klaus and Anne Lettmann from Lettmann paddles and kayaks came over from Germany to be with us at the Symposium and Chris Mitchell from Eddyline in the States was also with us. Mr Chillcheater, Chris Reed brought a van full of paddling clothes for folks to buy and adventure paddlers Barry Shaw and Justine Curgenven mingled with participants throughout the sessions.

We’ve been really pleased with the feedback we've received after the event and to hear how you got so much out of the symposium. As participant Steve said “Wow! What a fantastic event, its difficult the find the superlatives to express my appreciation to the entire team who so painstakingly put together all the elements to make the event such a success.”

The forward paddling technique sessions proved a real hit. The session run by Les Kirkpatrick made use of the Karitek paddling machine which was hooked up to a video screen to show your paddling style from all angles. As one participant, Anna, said "The paddling machine - what a great idea - I knew my forward paddling technique was poor and this bit of kit was great - got to see where I was going wrong and right on the screen and got to see other folks technique up close - including what they were doing with their feet/legs. Hopefully I've ditched some bad habits!"
